Hey guys

This post is not particularly directed at cog, but more of a general discussion.

Do you prefer cross platform apps?

In my search for the perfect (mostly open source) setup of my mac I have come across maybe hundreds of apps. Some proud themselves of being 'cross platform'. My initiate reaction is : that's nice. Larger userbase, better support forums etc.

On the other hand OS X native sounds pretty nifty too. The devs don't have to cut corners on the code, to make sure it fits everywhere. One UI means more time spent on just that one.

And that is why I post this.

I was looking for a rss-reader app, and stumbled on Vienna and RSSOwl. Both open source.

RSSOwl seems to be more customizable with plugins and whatnots. But it looks and feels like a windows program turned into a mac app.

Vienna is pretty. Every feature seem familiar and intuitive. But it has fewer features.

What do you prefer?

Some other programs.

Azureus: I don't like the interface, but I like the features.
Transmission: Pretty, intuitive, very large UI (EDIT: darn, vspader is right (look below))

Firefox... I gues they have the manpower to handle more than one user interface, but even they handle  some features differently than best practice on mac

VideoLan, looks and feels windowsy (or maybe linuxy)
Quicktime... Ahh come on.

Audacity again windowslike, but no free alternative

That is what I could think of. I guess there are pros and cons to everything, but at Audacity, Azures and videolan are pretty large projects, I think they could benefit from investing more in the UI on mac.

Subject is open for debate

1. There are so few possibilities, that I think it is redundant. An extra click is so little, moving the mouse is the time consumer here... I wouldn't use it, but I wouldn't mind it either.

2. Again, is there really a need for this? Or is it just adding a feature.

ps. I think the order should  be reverse... I mainly (only) use repeat all. And I am so self absorbed, that I assume most people mostly use repeat all.

Cool thanks.

What does the line do?

Will this problem disappear by itself when apps get used to the new behavior, or is it leopard, that needs a kick in the butt?

ps. get out of the house

Hey

I don't know if this is your fault or mine. But When I right click a song I see four instances of cog.app.

It has oly happened after I have been dl'ing the nightlies, but lots of other stuff is happening on my mac. Maybe the culprit is appfresh, that have begun using.

Anyways I gues I just want to know if anyone is experiencing the same issue?

Cheers

@vspader: I was dubious, when you wrote you'd do it, but trying it out I think it works like a charm.

It's gonna be exciting to hear Remain's input, he has a scary eye for details, I don't think of.

Please someone hurry with the icon/image help.

The random icon needs a heavy tune-up, and it would be very useful iff I could tell the difference between on and off.

Oh how I wish I paid attention in art class.

Other people might know better, but I think some post says that apple discourages drawers???

I just accidentally deleted my play list... approx. 2000 tracks.

Doubtful I pressed cmd-z and ... hep hey ... my play list is back.

I didn't expect this to work. But it did. It is probably an old feature, but it's cool. Great work everybody

I have both the up and down arrow int he bottom of the scroll bar (works as expected). Maybe Leopard can't decide whether to use the two arrows in the bottom or one in each end, and then makes a poor compromise.

Cheers

Working. You guys work fast at the moment... Once people make a problem clear to you (shame on me!) you have it fixed within a week in most cases.

One additional suggestion, that might fall under a different discussion. When new files are added in a huge playlist, maybe it would be great if the first new track was highlighted (blue lined).

I think I know why I am being ignored.

I thought spotlight was the search field in the tool bar. So I just found the spotlight window. Oops.

Maybe cog works as others expect it to, but not in my opinion.

So, for last time I promise, I will go over the issue again.

1. Search for anything in the search field in the tool bar

2. Add tracks from a folder in finder or the file tree window

3. Nothing happens

I would either expect:

a.  the tracks to be added behind the search (probably a poor solution, because I wouldn't realize there was a search and start nagging about the app not working)

b. the search to cancel out and show the entire list of music... newly added tracks included.

Cheers

Step 1
I search for anything in spotlight... the little search field with the magnifying glass... and leave the search in the search field

Step 2
I add tracks from the file tree

Result...
Nothing happens

Did I miss this smewhere else or don't anyone care?

hurt feelings all around... ;-)

I totally agree on the seperator between remove from queue and remove. Quite important actually

Thanks. A good round-up to a good question. I sort of wondered what the connection was between the cog (gear) and the steering wheel. I didn't really know about the cog (ship). And now wikipedia have to endure another cog (music player)

Cheers to spader and friends for building this. And to the rest of us for spamming the forums

If I put cake in the spotlight, and then try to add Alphabeat, nothing is added.

I thought it might be added hidden(ly?), but killing the spotlight shows that nothing is added to the playlist.

What is the preferred behavior?

1) Add files hidden by the spotlight

2) Kill the spotlight

I prefer the second option.

remain:

original title:
"Can't add to playlist, if something is written in spotlight"

Reading remain's post (on the context menu) I was about to argue: Follow the standard procedure.

But alas, our master nitpicker has prominent examples of both ways to do it.

I am really torn. Aesthetically I prefer to hide features, that don't apply. On the other hand I understand Remain's argument that when you want to perform an action, you don't want to be surprised when the menu opens.

So question is, what is more disrupting, encountering menu items, that 'don't work' or wondering where the items are, when they are hidden.

Whichever way the developers go, I foresee someone requesting an advanced preferences entry to device for yourself.

And just like the repeat submenu. Most (all?) people will use the buttons.

More nitpickyness

In my opinion next song (album) comes before previous song (album). Since most people will go next more often that previous, I guess.

The repeat submenu, while not the prettiest solution, is allright, as remain says, most people will use the button. About the order I am torn between consistency and userfriendlyness. I dare a guess and says most people will repeat all more often than album and song more often than album, maybe.

I totally agree.

I also wish for a sort by queue number. But this might not work if a song is queued more than once. I know I could use Play for the party play lists, but Cog is so neat

Add file... / add URL... is the pretty solution, but the other solution might contain the info needed to avoid confusion. I would go with Add file to playlist etc...

I get it too. Quite observant to catch that one

Wow..
I think it is great, that you spent the time building the list. I agree on a lot of the issues.

They haven't really been issues for me, as I mostly press play and leave it. But sometimes the small annoyances makes or breaks an app for some people. I have left software for small issues before.
