This kind of stuff needs a wiki. Editing and quoting specific bits is a pain! The wishlist would make a good wiki page too. Hmm.
dreamhost has a one-click wiki install
A couple of other things I thought of. XMMS has a queing system, where you could right click a song, and set it as the next to play. Might be handy. Also, watching files and alerting the user if they have moved/been deleted/are unable to play in some way.
Update: Thought of some more. Gapless mp3 headers, and mime-types for streaming.

I support the ZIP plugin! it would be very useful.
My idea about it: it should act as bridge: when cog detects a ZIP, uses that plugin. The plugin calls the unzip library and reads the contents of the zip file. Then, it calls the standard routine to detect the file types and calls the correct input plugin. This way, it would habdle recursive (!!!) zips perfectly.
I don't know whether the unzip library is able to seek inside a zip file, in order to avoid extracting the whole file to only read the id3 tag, but also extracting whole files to memory (not HD) should be enough.
About seeking inside zip files, why don't you look at the foobar2000 sources? I know it handles zips very well.
foobar2000 is not open source.
You are right... and I ALWAYS thought the opposite, just by seeing "software development kit" in the home.
Doh.
Is it possible to support the shared iTunes library? Guess it is so different because cog does not support library.
I'd love to see replay gain support added, it makes a huge difference when listening to a music collection on shuffle.
Edit: How about some kind of metadata database so it doesn't need to pull tag info from files every time?
