Why doesn't Apple's own iTunes do this?

iTunes DOES uses IDs and, as far as I remember, is able to play files even when they are in the trash bin!

I don't know if this could help you in your decision, but I suggested the same (I really needed it) to the author of LAConvolver.
He sent me a version with the features I asked for the day after. It worked immediately, we only changed the behaviour but it was already working.
I have no experience but it seems not so time consuming.

It's likely not very time consuming, there are just other things I'm also working on that get higher priority at the moment. I will put it on the 0.08 list though, because it may be a nice feature to have, though I may hold off until 0.09.
