Topic: Toolbar Based UI

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I think using a standard toolbar is a great idea.

The standard toolbar is great for customization.

I for one would certainly get rid of the Search Box if I could. (not to mention add a Stop button XD )

Some feedback:

-IMO, a Volume knob is neat as an imitation of a real life counterpart, but in terms of usability, it's one of the worse choices for an app control. Making your hand go left/right or up/down in a precise manner is relatively easy; making it go clockwise/counterclockwise in a precise manner... not so much.

Personally, I think a good ole' Volume slider would be best.

-I also hope the seeker bar will look more like the current one.

-Otherwise, looks great. ('cept for the placeholder icons, of course ;p ) This looks promising.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

A seeker bar like the one in the example is not a seek bar. It is a progress bar for processes where you don't know the duration... it is clearly an example vspader tried, not an actual proposal! :-)

I dislike the S-R buttons. They should not be implemented as buttons like these, but with (graphically) independent buttons, just like in iTunes. The example above makes me think they are exclusive!

I still prefer a volume slider, if possible a slider with a "trick": you don't see any number, just like in 0.06, but if you click and then type a number in the keyboard, the value typed is used (after a short delay, of course) and the slider updated.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

Another vote here for toolbar implementation and a sound slider (though I would not mind testing the knob acting as a slider thing).

Re: Toolbar Based UI

My concern is tag info showing, especially track titles and performers. I do mostly classical and things can get long. But I wonder how Pearl Jam's Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town would look in the toolbar display (longest non-classical title I have). But overall, I like the direction you're taking.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I for one vote for the current (0.06). Its great, no need to change.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I prefer the second image posted in this thread.

However, are the green, yellow, red window buttons a little too close to the playback buttons?

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I like the last image posted.
I suggest you to ship, among the customisable buttons, both the grouped (compact) and separated playback buttons (more customisable). It costs nothing.
The volume is ok in this new image.

Anyway, much better than the current, completely out of coherence, toolbar.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

This is a quickly thrown together mockup, I'm not too concerned about pixels yet. I just wanted to make sure it'd be doable and usable. I now see that it is, and will work on getting the functionality in, then we can all worry about pixels smile

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I really like this new UI idea save for two little problems:
- As mentioned above, long track/artist names would mess things up
- The search box is a little small. Maybe put the Shuffle/Repeat buttons on the bottom bar opposite the file/info drawer buttons.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

There is, I think. I'll look into it. This is a 0.09 feature though, so it'll be a while.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

I like it. In my case I'd have it separate down below and absent above. If I'm thinking right, such would allow more room for my long song and/or performer titles.

Plus, I am one that likes a big seek bar.

Whatever. I just like that Cog does what I need no matter how and for that I stand in thanks to all who work on this.

Re: Toolbar Based UI

That screenshot of Play is one of the least Mac-like interfaces I have ever seen. Woah.
