Topic: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

Cog is easy to use, however it's time consuming to convert my mp4's to mp3's in order to import my music to Cog. Any chance of incorporating an mp4 to mp3 converter with an import option and make a playlist? Excellent piece of software! cool

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

Mp4's should work fine, as long as they aren't DRMed. There is a glitch in the format of some iTunes Plus files (at least the ones I bought), but others should be ok.

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

tags don't work with some mp4's but they play just fine

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

Hmm, they shouldn't be greyed out, but if they were purchased then Cog cannot play them.

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

You sure they all have the .mp4 extension? That'd be all Cog looks at to determine if it's grayed out.

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

okay, Now I'm really confused. What is the difference between an m4p and mp4? And what is an m4a? I think the m4a are from albums that I imported from Master albums that I own, rather than those (albums) that I purchased from the iTunes store. Any suggestions vspader, before I go crazy.

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

the difference between m4a and m4p is that m4p are protected with drm (which means cog won't be able to play them). you're right that albums you imported yourself with itunes will be m4a, while protected files purchased from the itunes store will be m4p. i guess if you buy new-fangled 'itunes plus' tracks that don't have drm, they may be m4a too, but i have no evidence to back that up.

i think m4a stands for mpeg 4 audio, and obviously the p in m4p is to suggest that it's protected. if you have an audio (not video) file labelled .mp4, i don't know if that's exactly the same thing as a m4a file, but it might well be.

FYI, iTunes Plus tracks seem to be m4a, at least the ones I have.

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

Thanks for the tip. I had a quicktime plugin written, but didn't include it because it was incredibly buggy still. I also don't own any protected files, so I couldn't see if htey worked.

I'll check out SongBird's code though, see what they're doing.

too cheap to splurge on one of them $0.99 tracks? wink

Re: MP4 to MP3 converter with import option

I probably will once I get the quicktime plugin fixed up smile.

@vspader,

Thank you for the information. I agree with you on m4p's, I've made my last DRM purchase. It will be m4a's or nothing from now on.

cheers,
