Oh man, now you see why I've been reluctant to add these options. Holy crap this is ridiculous. I say people need to just press play when they want to play a song
In seriousness, I haven't had enough time to think about it. What do other audio players do both on and off OS X? They usually provide some insight on how to handle these things.

Wow... I am now utterly lost on anything. Soon cog will need one of those paper layovers for the keybord we used to have back when nothing was obvious and everything needed a key combination.
User choice is good, limiting choice is bad. Yes. But hold the reins for a moment.
#1:
Any key combination that does anything else than desired (including the slow animation with shift) is a bug. It will be reported by users. And some kind of official apple police should cease and arrest people who knowingly does something like that. It cannot be necessary.
#2:
I like the clear playlist on add feature. I like the play on add feature. I chose those settings. I am aware that I chose those setting. It will take me longer to remember the key combination, than to change the preference back, should I need it.
#3:
Most people are like me. They get an app. Play around with it. Adjust the preferences. Live with their choice. For hardcore users, who handle sound files on a more or less professional basis, all the key combinations might be useful. For most other people, they don't matter. Granted, the power users, should have their say, and shortcuts don't affect people who don't know them. But still the discussion seems out of hand.
#4:
One day in the future, cog will have a preference for showing advanced prefs. And the advanced prefs will feature fully customizable shortcuts. I know we are far from that point, but at the moment we are wasting time on a temporary solution.
#5:
How difficult is it to crank open the app in interface builder and change the shortcuts? Post a guide for it, and lets get on with it.
#6:
All work, no beer, makes Zitz go something, something. I just started a new job. I sleep too little, drink too little and work too much. Gets cranky. From now on I promise not to add anything to this thread unless I have something really clever to say. Maybe I should ban myself until after the weekend.
Enjoy the Friday, and may the sun shine upon you all, where ever you are.

I meant drag & drop into the playlist. (I'll edit.)

i really wish there was a way to disable the control-click acting as right click, system-wide. dammit.
oh and i agree it would be pretty safe to combine the two preferences, so one hotkey affects both autoplay and clearing of playlist. they make the most sense when used together.

Re: Clear playlist when adding new files [& auto play new songs & enqueue]
I'm with Zitz on this one (well, except for him banning himself and maybe #4,5).
I think we should just drop the modifiers. It sounds like they cannot be done without side effects, so we should do away with them. I think Finder/OSX "owns" those modifiers at that stage, and we're expected to keep our grubby hands off them.
Re: Clear playlist when adding new files [& auto play new songs & enqueue]
yeah i don't think i'd use modifiers for double-clicking in finder, but i hope we can still have them for dropping onto the dock icon or playlist
Re: Clear playlist when adding new files [& auto play new songs & enqueue]
Personally, I think Shift and Shift Control aren't so bad, and the only minor side effect of the slow-mo animation only occurs if you double-click in the Finder. (which hippy dave has promised not to use ;p )
There are zero side effects when dropping onto the Dock icon, opening through Open With, double-clicking in the File Tree Panel, and any other cases (which I cannot think of right now).
Re: Clear playlist when adding new files [& auto play new songs & enqueue]
My vote is to have one modifier (control-command seems not to have any side-effect) to choose play/enqueue, set autoplay to be default (as in all other players)
