A lot of stir in here, I like that 
Just my 2¢: The beams could really be a little less glossy, and in your (HERRIE!!) last version the 'inner' C looks too.. I don't know, orange?
But hey, that's just nitpicking and all in all it looks very good! It could only use some little improvements (but that's subjective too..), imho

I think that textures for dark & light parts of 'C' must be different.

Hi guys, nice work all round. I'm personally in favour of either keeping the old icons or updating them with herrie's. Changing to a different style completely doesn't appeal to me - I updated to the first build with changed icons, and didn't like it - I'm probably just set in my ways, but it didn't look like Cog any more. I wussed out and went back to the previous version
Maybe if we end up with more than one complete set of icons, it could be a configurable option to keep everyone happy? I hope the ship's wheel comes back tho, either way

Yes, you can use the old badges. But, I think, old badges needs some outline or thin shadow.

The old icons could really use some overhaul, like more (or in this case, any) 3D effects.

Arrr maties! I like the one dpromsky suggests the most, too. I can add the badges and work a little more on it to make it look clearer in the dock.
If others want to work with the Illustrator project file, just ask and I will share it.
